Now there’s even more reason to hug the one you’re with – whether it’s your partner, baby, friend or pet. Why? Experts say that people who hug those around them (or stroke their pet or even who have a massage), feel better than those who don’t and experience increased levels of oxytocin, a hormone that turns on dopamine, a natural brain chemical that makes us feel good.
And, the more you hug the ones you’re with, the better you feel. People who have affectionate contact several or more times a day, experts say, have higher oxytocin levels and when oxytocin is flowing stress is reduced, blood pressure goes down, mood improves and pain is more manageable. Stroking a pet, according to published research, increases oxytocin levels in both human and pet and a good rubdown can get the good-for-you-hormone flowing, too.
