As you know, doctors and hospitals in this country are paid mainly for delivering more care, and not necessarily better care. You may say, why not go the extra mile? But doctors get more reimbursement the more patients they see, so there is no incentive to strive for better care if it involves more time and effort. Geisinger basically guarantees its workmanship, charging a flat fee that includes 90 days of follow-up treatment. We hope other health systems will follow suit. Simply put, better care often means less money for many health systems, so a shake up is a breath of fresh air.
