Gene Research Hopeful for Alcoholics

Alcohol Addiction

In a new study reported in the Journal of Neuroscience, scientists said results of their brain imaging and genetic work showed that people with clinical addictions were not mere slaves to pleasure.

According to the scientists, a link between impulsive decisions and a faulty gene indicate that some forms of addiction may be treatable with drugs already on the market for conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Charlotte Boettiger, a psychologist with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and lead researcher, said: “Our data suggests there may be a cognitive difference in people with addictions. Their brains may not fully process the long-term consequences of their choices.”
