Well you know how popular supplements have been lately. We all take them and hope they help with our ailments, but a new study funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health, shows that glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, two supplements used to fight arthritis and joint pain doesn’t work any better than placebo to slow the loss of knee cartilage in osteoarthritis.
Dr. Allen Sawitzke of the University of Utah School of Medicine, said: “At two years, no treatment showed what we determined to be a clinically important reduction in joint space width loss.”

I will surely miss Paul Newman who died recently of cancer. The actor became famous worldwide for his philanthropy, especially through his range of Newman’s Own sauces and dressings, all the profits from which after tax went to his good causes, such as the 11 Hole in the Wall camps, for chronically ill children.

I guess Nebraska’s Safe Haven law was taken to the extreme. The Nebraska law was intended to protect newborn children, if a parent is overwhelmed, but now a man left nine of his children between the ages of 1 through 17 at Creighton University Medical in Omaha, Nebraska. The law states that any child under the age of 19 can be left at a hospital if they’re in immediate danger
The man won’t be prosecuted, at least not under the current version of the Safe Haven law. You would think that common sense dictates that it is for newborn children, but if a law is that broad, well it is broad. What can I say? Now Nebraska state legislators want to clarify the law.
Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman, said: “I’m absolutely surprised. When this bill was being discussed in the legislature, we had the discussion that this was going to be about young children and when they were in immediate danger. Like the rest of the country, we wanted to be there to help. Unfortunately they wrote the language too broad. We now need to amend that to change that.”

This is the age of consumer-directed healthcare, basically taking control of ones healthcare and patient satisfaction. However, that comes with a cost, as in higher health insurance deductibles.
According to the survey by the nonprofit Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Research & Educational Trust, the average premium for a family’s health insurance provided by an employer rose to $12,680. $3,354 of that was covered by employees on average, and 18 percent had a deductible of at least $1,000, up from 12 percent the previous year. Additional you are paying more of your health insurance than before with an average increase of 5 percent in health insurance premiums this year.

With the passing of Dr. Robert Katzman, who died last week at the age of 82 after battling heart disease for many years, it safe to say that he was instrumental in classifying Alzheimer’s disease as a major illness rather than a natural part of aging in the mid-1970’s.
Dr. Katzman was the founding director of the Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at the University of California San Diego. His “analysis of large populations of patients suffering from dementia, along with research by other scientists, convinced the neurologist that Alzheimer’s disease was the main cause of memory loss and other mental failings among older patients.”
