German researchers report in the June 8 online edition of Nature Medicine, that Velcade, a drug used to treat multiple myeloma, a cancer of the white blood cells, may also be a treatment for the chronic autoimmune disease lupus.

According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, Lupus is a so-called autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks healthy cells and tissues by mistake, leading to damage to joints, skin, blood vessels and organs. There are many kinds of lupus, with the most common type being systemic lupus erythematosus, which affects many parts of the body. There is no one test to diagnose lupus, and it may take months or years to make the diagnosis. There is also no cure, but medicines and lifestyle changes can help control the disease.

Lead researcher Dr. Reinhard Voll, of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Erlangen, Germany, said: “Proteasome inhibitors may be beneficial in refractory human diseases caused predominantly by autoantibodies.”

    Most cancer drugs - immunosuppresants.

Is it good idea instead of harmonizing immune system to suppress it?
