Raloxifene (Evista) Helps Reduce Breast Cancer Risk

Raloxifene, which was originally developed to prevent and treat osteoporosis, was later found to help reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer in high-risk women. Now it also may help reduce the risk of breast cancer in other women.

A new study published in the June 10 online issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, and funded by Eli Lilly and Co., which makes Evista, indicates that those who took raloxifene (Evista) regularly over a number of years were less likely to develop invasive estrogen-receptor (ER) positive breast cancer, compared with women who did not take the drug.

While it may help reduce the risk of breast cancer, the trial and others found an increased risk of blood clots and fatal strokes among women taking raloxifene. In other words, you have to weigh the risks and benefits of the drug.
