It is surprising to hear that some 17 teenage girls at a Gloucester, Massachusetts high school may have made a pact to intentionally get pregnant and raise the babies together. They may think that having a baby may be a status symbol, but as young single mothers, the road will be long and hard.
Greg Verga, a member of the Gloucester School Committee, said: “I did hear that there were cases where a teen went in several times for pregnancy tests and seemed depressed when it was negative.”
The city’s Mayor, Carolyn Kirk, said: “It’s the social environment these girls are coming from. They think that a baby can give them love or give them status or fill an empty space in their life, and these girls are very, very young. And I think if you talk to any teenage mother who is caring for an infant, the road is not easy.”
