Osteoporosis Considered a Silent Epidemic

Osteoporosis Symptoms

With one in every three women affected by osteoporosis and one in five men will suffer from the condition, osteoporosis is considered as the silent epidemic because it is detected late. There are 75 million people affected by the disease in the United States, Europe, and Japan.

Dr. Cynthia Ang-Muñoz at the 186th medical forum, said: “Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue leading to enhanced bone fragility and a consequent increase in fracture risk. Back pain, deformity of the spine, fracture, and loss of functional independence are some of the problems associated with osteoporosis. The peak bone mass is achieved at 20 to 22 years of age and determined by nutrition, genetics, hormones, and lifestyle.”
