FDA Approves Romiplostim For Treatment of Thrombocytopenia (Low Platelet Count)

Thrombocytopenia Low Platelet Count

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved romiplostim for subcutaneous injection (Nplate, Amgen Inc.) for the treatment of thrombocytopenia in patients with chronic immune (idiopathic) thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) who have had an insufficient response to corticosteroids, immunoglobulins, or splenectomy.

In simple terms, romiplostim can be used for treatment of thrombocytopenia, also called low platelet count. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Thrombocytopenia is the medical term for a low blood platelet count. Platelets (thrombocytes) are colorless blood cells that play an important role in blood clotting. They stop blood loss by clumping together and forming plugs in blood vessel holes.”

My 80 yr. old wife had a stroke a yr. ago. She has aphasia and rt. limb immobility. She also has an MAI lung infection causing frequent coughing to expel mucous.
A week ago she had a 163 heart rate overnite. She went to a local ER where they lowered it to 88 with medication.
After admission to the hosp. for observation, her platelet count dropped to 147,000. After catheter insertion (for some unexplained reason), her urine turned bloody. Meds. raised the platelet count and she was discharged after a favorable echocardigraph test.
What might I expect at home as caregiver?
