Doctor Reviews

Rotavirus in Children

Doctors revealed at an infectious diseases conference in Washington, that Merck & Co.’s Rotateq, a vaccine introduced in 2006, has significantly reduced hospitalizations and emergency room visits for kids with the rotavirus, the leading cause of diarrhea in infants.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “before the vaccine, more than 200,000 U.S. children were taken to emergency rooms and more than 55,000 were hospitalized each year with rotavirus, which causes vomiting and diarrhea, mostly from January through May. Worldwide, the virus kills 1,600 young children each day.”

Pediatricians Increase Vitamin D Recommendations

Physician Search

Leading pediatricians, not only increased the vitamin D recommendations for children from newborn to teens, they doubled it. More vitamin D is always good, since new studies show that it may help prevent serious disease.

Adrian Gombart, a vitamin D researcher at Oregon State University, indicates that his work on human tissue “has shown that vitamin D helps increase levels of a protein that kills bacteria. He said many experts believe that between 800 and 1,000 units daily would be more effective at helping fight disease.”

No Over-The-Counter Cold Remedies to Kids Under 4

In an election year, talk about flip flops, the drug companies that make over-the-counter cold remedies like Dimetapp and Pediacare announced they had changed their advice to parents for the second cold season in a row regarding giving kids cold medicine.

Basically, following the advice of pediatricians, they advice that kids under 4 should not be given over-the-counter cold remedies. Dr. Laura Herrera, a Baltimore family practitioner and mother of two, said: “Keeping them as comfortable as possible is certainly better than giving cough and cold medicines.”

Here is what the industry say parents should never do:

-Give adult medicines to a child.

-Give two or more medicines with the same ingredients at the same time.

-Give antihistamines to make a child sleepy.

And parents should:

-Give the exact recommended dose, using the measuring device that comes with the medicine.

-Keep medicines out of sight and out of reach.

-Consult their doctors if they have any questions.

SIDS: Fan Lowers Risks

For mothers with infants, this may be some comforting news. A new study indicates that Babies who sleep in rooms with a fan have a dramatically lower risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). However, SIDS continues to be the leading cause of death among infants in the first year of life.

This is one of the latest findings by researchers to suggest that a baby’s sleeping environment weighs heavily in the risk for SIDS, which is diagnosed when the sudden death of an infant can’t be explained by other health concerns.

The study, published recently in The Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, “found that simply having a fan in the room lowered a baby’s risk of SIDS by 72 percent. The gains were even greater if the baby slept on the stomach or was sleeping in a warmer room, both of which are risk factors for SIDS.”

Breast Cancer Detection: Computer-Aided

Breast Cancer Detection

Findings published online Wednesday by the New England Journal of Medicine, found that computer-aided detection spotted nearly the same number of cancers, 198 out of 227, compared to 199 for two radiologists or technicians.

In other words, computer-aided detection is just as good as two radiologists at spotting breast cancer on a mammogram. Not to say that two eyes are not better than one, but instead of one radiologist taking at look at it, as is the case in most readings, a computer could do as well as two pairs of eyes.

Dr. Carol H. Lee, a radiologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, said: “In the United States, it’s just not practical in most practices to do double readings by physicians. These results are reassuring to me that single reading with CAD can achieve that same sensitivity.”
